Independent Students are generally defined as those students who are age 24 or older and/or married and/or with eligible dependents. Dependent students are those students with no eligible dependents and/or not married and/or less than 24 years of age. Students may be considered “independent” if they fall into certain risk categories. Dependency status is not determined based on how your tax returns were filed with the IRS. Whether or not a parent claimed a student on their tax return has no bearing on dependency status. If you are unsure of your dependency status, please contact the Financial Aid Office at 225.292.5464.
