Course Title:         Legal Ethics One for the Paralegal  GLE-101/1

Semester Credit Hours: 1

Course Description:  The course will involve discussion of the ABA and Louisiana guidelines setting the standards for legal ethical issues. Emphasis will be on how to identify ethical issues and, once identified, on how to proceed.

Course Objective: The student will study the rules and law of professional ethics which apply to attorneys and paralegals.  Students will become familiar with the American Bar Association Model Rules of Professional Conduct and some important ways in which local rules differ from the ABA Model Rules.  Students will develop a full understanding of the need for paralegals to follow the rules of ethics and laws regarding unauthorized practice of law.

Course Title: Legal Ethics and the Relationship with the Client for the Paralegal    GLE-102/1

Course Description:    This course will explore the many ethical and malpractice pitfalls that paralegals and lawyers face in providing legal services.

Course Objective: To provide the student with the knowledge to evaluate his/her actions as a paralegal in light of the ethical rules and laws.

Course Title: Legal Ethics and the Judiciary for the Paralegal     GLE-103/1

Course Description: This course will explore the attorney’s and paralegal’s roles from an ethical standpoint on the basis of imputed disqualification, malpractice, consequences and penalties. This course also addresses client funds, fee setting and frivolous claims. 

Course Objective: To provide the student with complete knowledge of the law in recognizing ethical violations and how to report them.

Course Title:         Family Law One for the Paralegal  GFL-101/1

Semester Credit Hours: 1

Course Description:   To familiarize the student with family law in Louisiana.  Recent historical developments will be presented.  The difference between common law and community property states will be addressed.

Course Objective:  The student will study family law in Louisiana. The student will study Prenuptial and Ante nuptial Agreements.

Course Title: Family Law: Divorce:  Its Procedure and Its Ramifications for the Paralegal

 Course Description:  In addition to the substantive law, students will draft petitions for an uncontested divorce and separation of community property.  

Course Objective: Students will become familiar with the procedure of divorce in Louisiana, beginning with petitions and following to hearings, discovery and property settlements.

Course Title: Family Law: Children of Divorce and Adoption for the Paralegal  GDA-101/1

Semester Credit Hours:1

Course Description:  A basic introduction to children’s rights and parental responsibilities under adoption  laws as well as in divorce will be presented.

Course Objective: To familiarize students with child custody situations and solutions from a legal standpoint.  To introduce the rights of parents and children in adoption proceedings as well as divorce.

Course Title:         Litigation: Commencement for the Paralegal GLC-101/1

Course Description:   The goal of this course is to provide the student with a basic understanding of the rules and underlying principles that govern civil procedure and application of the rules to actual lawsuits. 

Course Objective:   To provide the student with a basic understanding of the rules and underlying principles that govern civil procedure and application of the rules to actual lawsuits.  .

Using those principles, the student will prepare a complaint from a factual legal situation.

Course Title:         Litigation: Discovery for the Paralegal  GLD-201/1

Semester Credit Hours:   1

 Course Description:   The goal of this course is to provide the student with a basic understanding of both state and federal rules and underlying principles that govern the drafting and answering of various discovery documents, as well as a thorough discussion of complete trial preparation.

Course Objective:   The student will prepare sample interrogatories and responses, as well as a notice of deposition and motion to compel.  Other skills developed during this course will include the preparation of a trial notebook, procedures and forms to subpoena witnesses.                                                                                                                                                                                                                

Course Title: Litigation: A Paralegal’s Preparation for Trial for the Paralegal           GLD-102/1

Course Description: The role of the paralegal in preparing for litigation, primarily in the preparation for trial.  An introduction to privilege,  remedies, settlement and arbitration. 

Course Objective: The students will learn how to organize evidence, prepare witnesses, and create motions and other documents trial.

Course Title:         Torts One for the Paralegal  GTO-100/1

Semester Credit Hours:   1

Course Description:  This course is designed to study torts as a field of law which is concerned with a person’s conduct and the resulting harm.  In general, the student will learn about harm to person and property.  Topics such as assault, battery, false imprisonment, and trespassing will be discussed.

Course Objective:  The student will learn the fundamentals of torts. The student will learn about intentional torts, negligence, liability without fault, injury to the person, damage to tangible property, and harm to intangible personal interest.

Course Title: Torts: Defense of and Other Factors Affecting Liability for the Paralegal GTO-101/1

Course Objective: This course will cover defenses to negligence as well as issues of consent, bad faith, and assumption of risk.

Course Description: Students will be introduced to the many defenses to liability as well as other factors affecting liability.

Course Title: Torts: Specific Liability for the Paralegal   GTO-102/1

Semester Hours:1

Course Description: A general survey of the substantive law products liability including tort law with an emphasis on strict liability, vicarious liability and joint and several liability.  Students will also be given knowledge in the area of parental liability, insurance and workmen’s compensation liability.

Course Objective: To familiarize the student with the substantive and procedural issues arising in the area of strict liability, including product and ultra hazardous liability, as well as liability attaching to animals and children.  Students will also be introduced to the role of insurance and workmen’s compensation in tort law.

Course Title:         Criminal Law One for the Paralegal  GCL-100/1

Course Description:  This course will introduce and familiarize the student with criminal law in Louisiana.  Students will study the various offenses which constitute a crime, as well as the general principles of culpability and justification.  Special attention will be given to an analysis of the Louisiana Criminal Code.

Course Objective:  To provide the student with a general knowledge of criminal law statutes.

Course Title: Criminal Law:  Procedures for the Paralegal GCL-101/1

Course Description: This course will introduce and familiarize the student with the procedural aspects of criminal law.  Students will study the Louisiana Code of Criminal Procedure as textbook, followed by its application to real-life criminal factual situations. 

Course Objective:   To provide the students with the fundamental skills and working knowledge of criminal procedure in Louisiana.

Course Title: Criminal Law:  Defending the Defendant for the Paralegal    GCL-102/1

Course Description:  The goal of this course is to familiarize students with legal defenses to criminal accusations as well as analyze Miranda warnings, confessions and admissions, and defendants’ constitutional rights.

Course Objective: To provide the students with the knowledge of the rights and defenses of criminal defendants. 

Course Title:         Legal Research One for the Paralegal GLR-101/1

Semester Credit Hours:   1

Course Description:  The course will provide an introduction to research materials and research tools used in the legal environment.  Students will learn to develop research strategies.

Course Objective:  Research is often a paralegal’s most-used skill.  This course will teach the student how to identify and use primary and secondary sources of law, as well as encyclopedias and treatises.  The student will also have the opportunity to develop skills using computerized legal research sources.

Course Title:         Legal Writing One for the Paralegal GLW-101/1

Course Description:  This course will provide the student with the basic tools and knowledge to effective master writing skills, structure, and style.  The student will learn strategy, legal reasoning, and proper form in legal writing.

Course Title:         Advanced Legal Research & Writing One for the Paralegal  GAR-204/1

Semester Credit Hours: 1

Course Description: This course will enable the student to improve and conjoin his/her methods of legal research and legal writing. The student will develop his/her capacity to research more intricate issues of law in a more accurate and precise method. The course will place an emphasis on the student’s ability to prepare complex legal documents such as the appellate brief.

Course Objective: The student will supplement and build on the skills acquired in Legal Research and Legal Writing; write complex legal memoranda and briefs; effectively use electronic legal research, including Lexus, CD-ROM, and Internet sources and earn effective writing in legal correspondence and intra-office memos.
