Course Title:         Administrative Law Seminar  SEA-101

Course Description:  This seminar is an overview of the management and understanding of an Administrative Law case.  It will provide the student with the practical method handling an Administrative Law case in the law firm.

Course Objective:  The student will learn the basics of administrative law and procedures involved in a case and the paralegal’s role in those cases.

Course Skills:  The first class of this course will cover an introduction to Administrative Law. The student will also learn the following: the Paralegal’s role in Administrative Law; how Administrative agencies fit into government; what authority Administrative agencies have; and the rule-making and due process areas of Administrative Law.

The second class will concentrate on Administrative agency investigations, both for the client and for the agency.   The student will also learn how judicial review applies to the law, the rights of the public, and how and where the paralegal can get information for Administrative Law research.

Course Title:         Alternate Dispute Resolution Seminar  SEA-102

Course Description:   This seminar is designed to provide students with a description and an overview of dispute resolution mechanisms; including litigation, voluntary arbitration, negotiation, and mediation. This is done in order to demonstrate their interrelationship and use in the American legal system.  It will look at new trends, such as med-arb, “rent-a-judge,” and early neutral evaluation. It will focus on evaluating client needs regarding the use of ADR, and will explore the changing climate of litigation-oriented practices. Paralegal participation and ethical concerns will be discussed in the context of each of these alternatives.

Course Objectives:  To acquaint the student with both theoretical study and practical experience of non-judicative dispute resolution.   To ensure that the student understands and is able to identify a range of possible non-adjudicative solutions to the resolution of legal disputes.  To teach the student to distinguish among the different non-adjudicative solutions in dispute resolution, i.e., mediation vs. negotiation vs. arbitration.  To give the student the opportunity to act as a mediator in a small claims dispute.

Course Title:         American Disabilities Act Seminar SEA-103

Course Description: This seminar will explore the American Disabilities Act.  It will review recent cases and analyze responsibilities of the employers.   Enforcement will be discussed.

Course Objective: The student will learn the provision of the ADA and employer/employee duties and responsibilities under the law.

Course Title:         Arrest, Search, & Seizure Seminar  SEA-104

Course Description:   This seminar will explore topics related to arrest, search and seizure. Privileges against arrest,  who may arrest, requirements, authority, warrant, grounds for arrest and civil rights under the constitution will be discussed. 

Course Objective: The student will learn Louisiana Law and procedures related to arrest, search and seizure.  

Course Title:         Auto Injury Seminar  SEA-105

Course Description: This seminar is an overview of the management of an auto injury case.  It also provides an understanding an automobile injury case law.  It will provide the student with the practical method of handling an auto injury case in the personal injury law firm.

Course Objective:   The student will learn the auto injury case from the initial interview of the client to the appeal process.

Course Title:         Basic Bankruptcy  SEB-101

Course Description: This course provides a basic understanding of the practical aspects of representation of debtors or creditors within the bankruptcy system.

Course Objective: The student will study and apply in practical exercises the following skills: prepare a forms booklet for the most common bankruptcies – Chapter 7, 11, and 13; draft all pertinent documentation and forms necessary to file a voluntary petition for bankruptcy in Chapter 7; debtor/creditor interviews; and legal research methods and reference sources applicable to this field of study.

Course Title:         Basic Legal Research on the World Wide Web Seminar  SEB-102

Course Description:  This seminar shows the student the basics of accessing the Internet, and what to look for once you get there. The seminar will focus on getting connected; basic web browsing; using search engines; what’s available; benefits of web research; free databases vs. premium or “pay” legal sites.

Course Objective: The student will learn the basics of legal research on the www; sites available and methods of using them.

Course Title:         Basic Louisiana Evidence Seminar  SEB-103

Course Description: The seminar is an overview of evidence in Louisiana Law.  It covers topics such as relevance, proving the case, objections, witness testimony, type of evidence, motions, forms and exhibits.

Course Objective: The student will learn the basic principles of evidence and how it is collected and presented.

Course Title:         Basic Real Estate Law Seminar  SEB-104

Course Description:   The first class of this seminar will cover an introduction to Real Estate. The student will also learn the following: the Paralegal’s role in Real Estate Law, explanation of real property and personal property, what is fixtures, and the different types of real estate. The student will also study legal descriptions and their importance in real estate documents.  The second class will concentrate on recording real estate documents and the rules for ownership of real estate.  The student will also learn the different types of documents that should be recorded and how property is transferred at a real estate closing.

Course Objective: The student will gain an understanding of Real Estate Law.  The student will learn how real estate is described, transferred, recorded and the role of the paralegal in these procedures.

Course Title:         Campaign Law and Management Seminar SEC-101

Course Description: This seminar is designed for the student that plans to work in an actively political law office or who would like to be a professional campaign manager.  The basics of campaign law and management will be explored by the class.  The use of legal research skills to conduct opposition research will be explained.  This is a very specialized seminar and should only be utilized by students who intend to work in the political arena and need an understanding of the law related to campaigns.

Course Objective: The student will learn the basics of Federal and Louisiana State Law related to campaigning for political office.  The student will learn to use legal research to conduct opposition research, ranging from court records to legislative voting records.

Course Title:         Child Custody and Support Seminar  SEC-102

Course Description:  This seminar is an overview of Child Custody and Support.  It will provide the student with the practical method of handling a Child Custody and Support case in a law firm.  The instructor will discuss the evolving process and provide the student with valuable information to prepare themselves as a paralegal and the attorney’s client for an emotionally demanding ordeal.  Students will study a custody and visitation case at various stages.

Course Objective:   The student will learn how to prepare for the various stages of custody and visitation legation.  The student will learn to evaluate the case from early stages to the presentation of the custody/visitation case by the attorney at trial.

Course Title:         Civil Rights Law Seminar  SEC-103

Course Description: This seminar is an overview of Civil Rights Law in recent years.  It will provide the student with the practical understanding of cases in the area of civil rights.

Course Objective:   To provide the student with the understanding of civil rights cases that the courts have ruled on in recent years.

Course Title:         Client Relations for the Paralegal Seminar  SEC-104

Course Description:  The paralegal profession is continually being developed as a means to assist attorneys in  rendering legal services to clients.  Paralegals are trained to understand law and are educated in many legal skills that allow them to act as legal assistants. This arrangement helps curb rising legal costs and frees attorneys to handle the more complicated legal matters. Although the use of paralegals has become an integral part of the practice of law, many clients may be unfamiliar and uncomfortable interacting with paralegals.  This course is designed to allow students to develop the interpersonal skills necessary for dealing with clients in a law office environment. 

Course Objective:  Students learn the importance of establishing a professional relationship with clients, defining the role of the paralegal in the practice of law, of avoiding ethical problems, and of developing proper interviewing skills.

Course Title:         Collection Law Seminar  SEC-105

Course Description:   Louisiana  and Federal Legislation related to debt collectors will be explored.  The operation of a collection practice will be discussed from the initial review of a debt, the collection suit, payment programs and judgment collection.  Forms and terms of collection law will be reviewed.

Course Objective: The student will learn the basics of collection law and explore the operations of a collection law firm.

Course Title:         Construction Defects Seminar  SEC-106

Course Description: Construction defect cases are among the “hottest” and most difficult to handle for both plaintiffs and defendants. They usually involve numerous parties and claims between and among homeowners’ associations, contractors, subcontractors, architects, engineers, materials suppliers, insurers, etc.   The number of parties and issues complicates case management, settlement and trial. This seminar will focus on techniques to help you manage and litigate these claims.

Course Objective: The student will learn the basic understanding of how to manage and litigate construction defects claims.

Course Title:         DWI Defense Seminar  SED-101

Course Description:   This seminar is designed to allow students to learn about the techniques employed, the issues raised, and future trends to look for when defending a person accused of driving while intoxicated. Students learn not only common principles of a criminal law practice; they also learn how to apply those principles in a practical manner in the context of a typical DWI case.

Course Title:         Divorce Seminar  SED-102

Course Description: This seminar is an overview and understanding of a divorce case. Louisiana divorce law will be discussed from the view point of the female.  The covenant marriage as defined under Louisiana law will be reviewed as will as the no fault.  Property settlements will be developed and discussed.  A divorce petition drafting will be reviewed.

Course Objective:   The student will learn how a divorce case progresses and a basic understanding of divorce law in Louisiana.

Course Title:         Domestic Violence and the Law Seminar  SED-103

Course Description:   The student will study in both family and criminal law arenas, from both the role of a prosecutor office paralegal and as a paralegal in a private counsel office.  This allows for the student to evaluate the benefits and limits of these interventions into the complex problem of domestic violence, and the implications for the quality of a paralegal assisting a litigator’s practice.

Course Objective: The student will learn how to respond to abuse accusation raised in the context of a divorce or custody matter, and tactics to protect the client from an abusive spouse.  The student will learn about the proper protocol for investigating allegations of child sexual abuse.

Course Title:         Drafting Business Documents Seminar  SED-104

Course Description:  This seminar is designed to teach basic business document drafting and to provide practical experience in drafting those documents.

Course Objective:  The student will be introduced to the paralegal’s role in drafting business documents and the elements to consider before drafting such documents.

Course Title:         Drafting Wills or Trusts Seminar  SED-105

Course Description:  To familiarize the student with wills, successions, donations, and trusts.  This seminar will give the student an overview of the Louisiana Civil Code in regard to successions, donations and trusts and their importance in everyday life.  Each student will write a will as a class activity.

Course Title:         Elder Law Seminar  SEE-101

Course Description:  In 1985, 12% of the USA population was over the age of sixty five.  This older segment of the population has different needs.  This seminar will provide the student with an overview of the areas in which senior citizens seek counsel and guidance.  Upon successful completion the student will have the knowledge and skills necessary to assist in delivering services to this growing group of clinics.

Course Description:   This seminar will explore the basics of laws related to employment discrimination. Seniority Systems, Disparate Treatment, Affirmative Action, Title VII, Age and equal pay will be reviewed.

Course Title:         Employment Law Seminar  SEE-103

Course Description: This seminar is an overview of the management Employment Law case.  It will provide the student with the practical method of handling an Employment Law case.

Course Objective:   The student will gain an understanding of the employment law case from the initial client interview through the appeal process.

Course Title:         Family and Medical Leave Act Seminar  SEF-101

Course Description: This seminar will explore the Family and Medical Leave Act.  It will inform participants of their rights as an employee or as an employer.  The provisions of the Act will be reviewed.  Students will learn to calculate leave and to maintain compliance with the law.  The impact of other laws will be studied.

Course Objective:   The student will learn the fundamentals of The Family and Medical Leave Act.  The processes involved in following the law will be learned by the student, as well as the impact of other laws on the Act.

Course Title:         Finding Concealed Assets & Financial Aspects of Divorce Seminar  SEF-102

Course Description:  This seminar will introduce the student as to how to find concealed assets and to analyzing present and future financial outcomes of a divorce case.  The paralegal student will study the importance of assets discovery and planning and the pitfalls of financial considerations.

Course Objective: The student will learn to analyze financial aspects of divorce.  The student will learn to avoid the pitfalls of poor financial considerations during a divorce case.

Course Title:         Forming and Liquidating a Corporation Seminar  SEF-103

Course Description: The seminar will provide the student with an understanding of the corporation under Louisiana law.  How to prepare documents and where to file them.  It will explain the responsibilities of officers and directors and the secretary of state.  They will draft corporation papers for a business during class.

Course Objective: The student will learn to draft corporation papers.  The student will learn the Louisiana law related to officers and director of the corporation in Louisiana.  The student will learn to liquidate a corporation.

Course Title:         Fraud and Forgery Law Seminar  SEF-104

Course Description: This seminar will provide the student with a view of the criminal process of fraud, the access devices used to commit fraud.  The recovery of loses and the criminal punishment of the person committing fraud will be studied.

Course Objective: The student will learn the basics of laws related to fraud and the access devices used and method of recovery loses and criminal punishment procedure.

Course Title:         Grammar for the Paralegal Seminar  SEG-101

Course Description:  The student will be exposed to a refresher course in grammar, punctuation, and practical writing tips. The student will participate in lecture, as well as practical application exercises of the material. In addition, the student is encouraged to bring writing samples for critique.

Course Objective:   The student will learn the fundamentals of grammar, punctuation, and basic writing perks.

Course Title:         Healthcare Law Seminar  SEH-101

Course Description: This seminar will explore healthcare law.  It will provide the student with an understanding of the government, patient, provider and legal systems relationship.

Course Objective: The student will learn the general nature of healthcare law and how the law impacts the patient and provider.

Court Title:           Juvenile Law Seminar  SEJ-101

Course Description:  This seminar considers problems unique to children in the legal system, including the rights and responsibilities of parents, the power of the state to interfere in the parent-child relationship, and the Juvenile Court system. Special attention is given to problems of child abuse and neglect. One or more current case studies may serve as the basis for analysis of a series of broader questions concerning the child, the family, and the state.

Course Title:         Law and Ethics Seminar  SEL-101

Course Description:  The student will become familiar with the nature, meaning and functions of law, the sources of law, the federal and state court structure, the historical development of civil and common law, the development of law in England and the United States, the role of the paralegal, and the self-regulatory aspects of professional responsibility and ethics, especially as they affect the paralegal.

Course Title:         Law Practice Management Seminar  SEL-102

Course Description:  This is a fast pace introduction seminar designed to provide the student with an overview of law practice management. This seminar will cover the fundamentals of law office management and organization. Subjects covered include: basic principles and structure of management, employment opportunities for the paralegal, timekeeping and accounting systems, marketing issues, administrative and substantive systems in the law office, and law practice technology.

Course Objectives: Upon completion of this seminar, the student will be able to identify and explain basic principles of management; explain issues involving employment and promotion of legal assistants; identify and describe the different types of law offices including organization, management, and personnel structure; identify and explain the different management, administrative, and support roles performed by lawyers and non-lawyers in the law office; describe and explain accounting systems used in the law office;  explain how law offices determine the cost of legal services; identify administrative systems used in law practice including client relation systems, conflict management, personnel, docket/calendar systems, fee and billing systems, and risk management systems; identify and explain substantive systems in the law office including systems approach to law practice; identify the essential components of a substantive system; explain the role of technology in the management and administration of the law office;  Explain the use of technology to assist in the handling of substantive practice areas.

Course Title:         Legislative Lobbying Seminar  SEL-104

Course Description: This seminar is an overview of the process by which the law is made and changed.  The student will study the Louisiana State Legislature and how a bill is developed and proceeds through that body and becomes law.  The student will study the methods used to lobby the legislature on behalf of groups, associations, businesses and individuals.

Course Objective:   To provide the student with an understanding of the legislative process with emphasis on lobbying legislators.

Course Title:         Legal Database Research  SEL-105

Course Description: This course will provide instruction on searching, printing and downloading comprehensive federal and state cases and codes, patent and trademark registrations, public and private company information, U.S. and international news sources, public records and Sheppard’s online.

Course Objective: The students will acquire the tools to become an efficient and cost-effective researcher through the lexis.com research system.

Course Title:         Local Court Operation Seminar  SEL-106

Course Description: This seminar is designed to allow students to learn about court organization and administrative structure in an interesting and educational manner. Students with little or no court experience should become familiar with the operation of the local district and city courts. They are introduced to court organization, administrative court structure, the role of the clerk of court’s office, court personnel, the various sections of court, allotment of cases, special hearing days, duty court, small claims court, and matters related to the organization and operation of the court system. Students will learn to relate this information to the daily needs of the law office environment.

Course Objective:   The student will learn court organization and administrative structure.  The student will learn how court organization, administrative court structure, the role of the clerk of court’s office, court personnel, the various sections of court, allotment of cases, special hearing days, duty court, small claims court, and matters related to the organization and operation of the court system are organized.  Students will learn to relate this information to the daily needs of the law office environment.

Course Title:         Louisiana Community Property Seminar  SEL-107

Course Description:   This seminar will explore community property law in Louisiana.  It will review sharing and classification of assets, community management liabilities, termination and taxation.   Matrimonial Agreements and  Contracts as well as conflict of law.  The Statutes, Code Articles and Cases will be studied.

Course Objective: The student will learn the basics of matrimonial regimes in Louisiana.

Course Title:         Louisiana Environment Law Seminar  SEL-107

Course Description: This seminar will explore the basics of environmental law with emphasis on Louisiana law and regulations and enforcement.  It will explain terms and forms used in environmental law.  The Judicial Role in Environmental Law and Federalism will be discussed. Pollution control and risk management will be explored.  Louisiana’s law; the regulation of industry and the department of government that oversees the environmental quality of the state will be discussed.

Course Objective: The students will examine the basics of environmental law with emphasis on Louisiana law, enforcement and regulations.

Course Title:         Louisiana Mineral Rights Law Seminar  SEL-108

Course Description:  This seminar will explore the basics of Mineral Rights Law in Louisiana.  It will review leasing, title, divided ownership, dry holes, royalties, servitude, rights of oil companies and individuals, and other topics of interest to the students in the class.  This is an introductory course designed to provide only the basics of Mineral Rights in Louisiana.

Course Objective:   The student will learn the basic principles of Mineral Rights Law in Louisiana.

Course Title:         Louisiana Lending Law Seminar  SEL-110

Course Description:  This is an exploratory seminar covering the laws in Louisiana concerning lending by banking and other lending institutions.  The seminar will review several different types of lending and the remedies related to them.

Course Objective:  The student will gain an understanding of Lending Law in Louisiana. 

Course Title:         Managing the Law Library Seminar  SEM-101

Course Description: This is an overview and discussion seminar.  Current issues and developments in library management will be explored.  The speed of technological and other developments and the economics of law practice continue to challenge the law librarian’s management skills. For this seminar the college will assembled some of the Louisiana’s Law Librarians to discuss the key management issues facing law librarians and offer their solutions.  This course is designed for the practicing librarian or a paralegal who have major responsibility for the law library or who hope to become a law librarian

Course Objective: The student will gain basic knowledge of Law Library Management and solutions to a limited number of problems.

Course Title:         Medical Records Management Seminar  SEM-102

Course Description: This seminar is an overview of medical records in a legal case.  It will provide the student with the practical method of handling medical records.

Course Objective:   The student will gain an understanding of medical records management in a law office environment.

Course Title:         Mock Trial Seminar  SEM-103

Course Description: This seminar is designed to help students learn about trials and court proceedings in an interesting and educational manner. Students with little or no court experience should become familiar with the role of a trial court in resolving legal disputes.  They are introduced to court procedures, courtroom decorum, and learn about the various people in the courtroom, including the trial judge, the attorneys, the parties, the jury, the media, the public, the bailiff, the witnesses, and the court staff. Involvement in a mock trial allows students to practice communication and critical thinking skills as they prepare and present their case or play the role of one of the other courtroom characters.

Course Objective: The student will learn trial and court procedures  The student will be introduced to court procedures, courtroom decorum, and learn about the various people in the courtroom, including the trial judge, the attorneys, the parties, the jury, the media, the public, the bailiff, the witnesses, and the court staff.

Course Title:         Motion Practice Seminar  SEM-104

Course Description: This seminar will explore various forms of motions that are filed with courts.  The students will study and participate in the development and writing of motions.

Course Objective: The student will learn to develop and draft motions.  The use of different types of motions will be learned by the student.  The importance of timing and proper filing will be understood by the student.

Course Title:         Nonprofit Organization Law Seminar  SEN-101

Course Description:  An introduction to Nonprofit trade and community association law including the substantive law and practice relating to trade groups, condominiums, homeowner associations, golf and country clubs, resort development, and mixed use developments. Fundamental duties and allocations of power between shareholders, directors, and officers are examined, together with the legal rights that flow from these duties and allocations.

An exploration of the federal regulation of nonprofit organizations, with special emphasis placed on trade, arts, and other charitable corporations. The limitations restricting trade, charitable, arts involvement in partisan activity will be considered, as well as the Unrelated Business Income Tax applicable to nonprofit organizations that engage in commercial activity not directly related to their purposes. While this is not a tax course, most of the federal regulations governing nonprofit organizations have been promulgated by the Treasury Department.

Course Objective:  The student will learn the basics of nonprofit associations, including director’s duties, partisan activities, business income, and other areas related to the law and regulations governing these organizations.

Course Title:         Nursing Home Neglect Seminar  SEN-102

Course Description:   Students will be exposed to the common indicators of neglect and abuse and the federal and state statutory laws relevant to protecting residents of nursing homes, as well as protecting the rights of resident relatives.

Course Objective: Students will learn the basics of federal and state laws regarding nursing home residence.  Nursing Home Residents’ Bill of Rights as well as State and Federal responsibility of assurance will be learned by the students.

Course Title:         Personal Injury Seminar  SEP-101

Course Description: This seminar is an overview of the management of a personal injury case.  It will provide the student with the practical method of handling a personal injury case in a  law firm.

Course Objective:   The student will learn the personal injury case from the initial client interview to the appeal process.

Course Title:         Preparing a Trial Notebook Seminar  SEP-102

Course Description:  The first class of this seminar will cover an explanation of  a trial notebook.    The instructor will lecture on the importance of the trial notebook and how it should be organized.  The student will learn tips on how to coordinate with the attorney on how he or she would like the notebook organized and the information included to help in trial.  The second class will concentrate on the actual contents of the notebook.  The instructor will provide a sample of a notebook and will lecture on the separate sections and their importance.

Course Objective: The student will be introduced to the importance of a trial notebook and the paralegal’s role in preparing the notebook.  The student will learn important tips in organizing the notebook and how to be prepared for each aspect of trial.

Course Title:         Products Liability Seminar  SEP-103

Course Description:  A general survey of the substantive law products liability including tort law with an emphasis on strict liability in tort, contract law with an emphasis on warranty, and legislation and administrative law. A review of federal and state rules of civil procedure, particularly regarding discovery, as they apply in the products liability context.  A focus on a limited number of specialized product areas to consider theoretical and practical aspects of handling products litigation.

Course Objective: The student will gain a basic understanding of substantive law products liability.  The student will learn by focusing on a limited number of specialized product areas to consider theoretical and practical aspects of handling products litigation.

Course Title:         Proofreading for the Law Office Seminar   SEP-104

Course Description: In this seminar students learn through application.  The seminar provides a brief guide to reviewing law office documents.  Document production will be explored.  Developing thinking skills related to proofreading in the law office will be reviewed.

Course Objective: The student will learn the basics of reading a law office document for punctuation, word choice, capitalization, numbers, abbreviations and proper nouns.  The student will review spelling and word division tips.

Course Title:         Sex Discrimination Seminar  SES-101

Course Description:  This seminar will provide students with a basic understanding of sex discrimination law.  It will explore equal rights in health care, education, employment, and other major areas of the law.

Course Objective: The student will learn the basics of the fundamentals of sex discrimination law and the basics of the concepts underlying equal justice under the law.

Course Description:  While great strides have been made in reducing the incidences of sexual harassment in the workplace, it still exists. The only way to remove harassment is through education. This seminar will explain the types of sexual harassment, sources of law, and employer liability.

Course Objective: The student will learn the types of sexual harassment, sources of law, employer liability and the processes in filing a claim.

Course Title:         Termination of Employment Seminar  SET-101

Course Description: This seminar is an overview of the management and understanding of employment termination cases in Louisiana.   The seminar will provide the student with the practical method of handling employment termination cases.

Course Objectives:   The student will learn the basics of the employment termination case from the initial client interview to the appeal process.

Course Title:         Trademark, Patent and Copyright Law Seminar  SET-102

Course Description: This seminar will examine four domains of the law:  patents, trademarks, copyrights and trade secrets. The scope of protection afforded by these areas is explored and compared. The student will study the acquisition, maintenance, and enforcement of trademark rights in the U.S.

Course Objective: The student will learn the fundamentals of patents, trademark, copyrights and trade secrets law. 

Course Title:         Traffic Ticket Defense Seminar  SET-103

Course Description:   This seminar will critique methods of defending a client in traffic court from the initial investigation – the event, through managing dealings with the state or parish government, to appeals court.

Course Objective: The student will learn to basics of defining a traffic ticket offence in a Louisiana court.

Course Title:         Worker’s Compensation Cases Seminar SEW-101

Course Description: This course will introduce the student to worker disability compensation law in Louisiana.  Students will hear discussions of the Act and the worker rights as well as the employer, along with the interview of a client and whether or not to file.  Terms and forms used in worker comp law will be reviewed.

Course Objective: The student will learn the basics of worker disability compensation law and how and when to use the Act.

Course Title:         Writing/Career Development Seminar  SEW-102

Course Description:  The student will prepare a writing portfolio containing samples of assignments, papers, and letters for review by the instructor for constructive criticism.  The final portfolio is approved by the instructor and may become a permanent part of the student’s file at his or her request.  In the career development portion of this class, the student will receive career counseling and learn resume preparation, interviewing, and job search techniques.

Course Objective:  The student will learn to prepare a writing portfolio containing samples of assignments, papers, and letters.  The student will prepare a resume and practice job search and interview techniques.
